Woonerf Living Streets
A
woonerf (pronounced with a “v” as in “voonerf”) roadway is a living street; it uses traffic calming techniques to slow down vehicles, and thereby give priority to pedestrians, cyclists and local activity. The concept was pioneered in the Netherlands in the 1970s.
It is designed to not only increase overall utility of streetscapes. It encourages and develops the public room to produce more collisionable hours–higher numbers of casual, unplanned interactions between people working, learning, having fun and
living
in the community as well as passing through.
