Urban Boundary Expansion–Ottawa ON

The City of Ottawa submitted its view on urban boundary expansion to the OMB (Ontario Municipal Board) in 2011 via its Deputy City Manager, Nancy Schepers.

The City’s point is that expansion of the boundary contributes to urban sprawl. However, one could also view expansion as providing more alternative forms of housing–not everyone wants to live in an apartment above a pub on Elgin Street.

In fact, if the City wants to create a higher density community, then they have to build out as well as up. Otherwise, the rent curve in New York City and in Ottawa would be the same which they are not.
