develop walkable neighborhoods with all the commercial services they need close by or integrated into the community
build a great experience for residents, workers, visitors and guests
promote strong societal gain, tolerance and inclusiveness as well as diversity
optimize returns for developers, investors, owners and tenants too
protect the environment
be self sufficient (or close to it) in terms of food and energy production
reduce waste
embrace the FEHAJ (for every home a job) movement.

Jonathan Westeinde is founder and CEO of the Windmill Development Group, one of Canada’s well-known green building developers. Windmill has completed over $1B of developments since inception in 2003 with a strong pipeline of future projects in place. Jonathan is specifically interested in creating alternative financing vehicles to embed sustainability into projects and is a recognized leader in Canada for finding innovative solutions for non-conventional lifecycle financing issues. This ingenuity has led to firsts in the green building industry, including innovative partnerships to create zero carbon district energy systems, energy services contracts to introduce geothermal, and green loans. Jonathan’s most recent focus has been a new targeted sustainable communities impact investment fund which is currently underway. Jonathan sits on a number of profit and non-profit boards. Jonathan holds an MBA from Trinity College, Ireland and a BA Economics from the University of Western Ontario. Toon Dreessen is a graduate of Carleton University’s Azrieli School of Architecture & Urbanism and recipient of the Alpha Rho Chi medal. Toon is a member of the American Institute of Architects and was inducted into the RAIC College of Fellows in 2016. He leads his ISO 9001:2015 certified company, Architects DCA, and is responsible for award winning, high-profile infill development. DCA is a firm with roots dating back more than 40 years. Toon also served six years on OAA committees & joined the Ontario Association of Architects Council where he served two years as president. Mr Dreessen leads DCA’s activism in terms of social justice, gender equity, fiscal responsibility and the role of architects in strategic, visionary, and thoughtful planning. Toon is a recognized speaker and author with local and national media experience including CBC Radio, the Globe and Mail and Ottawa Citizen.
