Mayor Jim Watson Speaks at Artifex

Posted on
Friday 22 June 2012

National Gallery of Canada, June 20, 2012

Good evening ladies and gentlemen. Bonsoir, Mesdames et Messieurs. It is a pleasure for me to be here tonight. I would like to take this opportunity to welcome you to the Professional Artists Gala and the inaugural “Artifex” event in support of Ottawa’s artistic entrepreneurs.

J’aimerais saisir cette occasion pour accueillir tout le monde à l’activité inaugurale « Artifex » en soutien aux artistes entrepreneurs.

I would also like to congratulate Exploriem.org, protoypeD.org, and every artpreneur and entrepreneur as we celebrate the diversity of our city’s artistic community and industry.

Mayor Jim Watson at Artifex

Like you, the City of Ottawa is passionate about the arts.

That’s why:

• The City’s 2012 Budget included $12 million capital investment for the redevelopment of Arts Court, Ottawa’s centre for local arts organizations, including the Ottawa Art Gallery.

• The City has invested in the creation of a Major Events Office, in partnership with Ottawa Tourism, to attract major events to the nation’s capital, which will help grow the city’s tourism sector.

o Examples of major events include the 2012 JUNO Awards, which the City successfully hosted earlier this year.

o The JUNOS had an estimated economic impact of $10 million on the National Capital Region.

Well, tonight our artists in attendance include designers, new media creators, filmmakers, musicians, visual artists, writers and more.

Included within this talented group is well-known individual and entrepreneur, Bruce Firestone. I am pleased to be able to recognize Bruce this evening on the launch and release of his new book “Quantum Entity | We Are All ONE” – Book One of his new trilogy.

I would also like to recognize Director Janak Alford for his short film production, Quantum Entity, Generation Q, which is based on Bruce’s book. I am a science fiction fan, so I can’t wait to watch the film and read the book.

In addition to Janak Alford’s short film, his not-for-profit organization, prototypeD.org, is launching a new Ottawa-based industry here tonight – ‘film trailers’ – with all original material for new books, products and services.

Lastly, I would like to thank Jawad Rathore and Vince Petrozza of Fortress Real Capital who has made a huge commitment to our city by working with Brad Lamb and Lamb Development Corporation on impressive projects, including the Soba and Gotham condominium developments.

These projects not only add to the urban fabric of our city, but make it a more interesting place to live.

I understand that Jawad and Vince have something to present to Exploriem.org and their manager, Ms. Erika Godwin.

Jawad and Vince, if you would like to come join me here…

[Jawad Rathore and Vince Petrozza say a few words. Erika Godwin says a few words. Cheque is exchanged.]

Thank you, Jawad, Vince and Erika.

I would also like to remind everyone that Bruce and his family gave one of the most extensive and impressive collections of Canadian Art to the City of Ottawa, centred on the Group of Seven. With the $12 million capital investment for the redevelopment of Arts Court and the Ottawa Art Gallery I discussed above, the Firestone Collection will finally have a deserving place to be exhibited in.

In closing, this is a wonderful night for a great cause. Thank you for inviting me.

Merci beaucoup,

Jim Watson, Mayor

Radio Plays

Posted on
Friday 22 June 2012

Some of the cast of the film Quantum Entity | We Are All ONE, Generation Q came together at prototypeD.org to record two scenes from Book 1 as radio plays.

In Scene 1, you’ll hear superstar performance artist Nell reporting to business dynamo, the fabulous Ellen Brooks, that CEO, Damien Bell, leader of their upstart, globe-spanning tech company, Quantum Computing Corporation, has been kidnapped by persons unknown. Next Ellen, assisted by Quantum Entities, Pet3r, Ash3r and Su7e, have to figure out what’s going on and then decide what to do about it.

In Scene 2, we will listen to an exchange between Damien and his captor.

Book Synopsis

In mid 21st Century America, the young people who have created, founded, grown and defended a world-spanning new tech company come face to face with implacable enemies– entrenched political and business interests who want to break up or destroy Quantum Computing Corporation.

More Background

Blessing on Artpreneurs

Posted on
Thursday 21 June 2012

Blessing at Artifex given by Padre Chris Brydges, my brother from another mother

Gracious and loving God, I want to thank you for the gift of fellowship, for the gift of music, and talent, for the arts, for the blessings that these gifts give others in the joy they bring, the reflection they cause, the hearts they stir.

Christian Brydges, Padre

Create in our hearts an ongoing and continuing passion that reminds us that we are all one; one people, one creation. Give us the desire to see more clearly, to hear the sounds of Creation that echo all around us, to connect with others who hear and who need to be heard, to make the world better through our action and commitment.

Make us stewards of not only the physical world, but the insubstantial. Make us champions of love. Make us warriors for justice. Make us the ones to stand up and say what is right, to help put an end to inequity everywhere. As our world continues to see political struggle and upheaval, embolden us to continue to press for human rights, for dignity, for universal integrity, where no child should go hungry, no society remain in chains of oppression and tyranny, and no culture subjected to perversion for evil and selfish reasons.

Give us all insight, and help us to be better people. The Hopi word for insight, or a vision quest is Hanblecheyapi. Grant us the peace to accept what you would tell us, and grant us the strength to stand up, and the courage to talk about revolution in a whisper, for we are the Successors and we pass our own revolution, on to the next generation.

In Jesus’ name, AMEN.

Christian Brydges

7:25 pm – 7:34 pm Rob introduces himself again: Hi everyone and welcome to the First Annual Artifex Professional Artists Gala presented by Fortress Real Capital. Tonight is a celebration of artpreneurs—people who add so much to our lives. Did you know that the average Canadian artist makes just $22,000 per year? Artifex is a showcase for music, visual art, film, technology, writers, designers, actors and much more. It’s our own South By Southwest but packaged into a few hours instead of eight days!

Artifex is organized by the people at Exploriem.org—which is an Ottawa-based not-for-profit organization dedicated to mentoring and assisting entrepreneurs, intrapreneurs and artpreneurs.

Why artpreneurs? Well firstly they don’t get enough recognition and secondly they add so much to our community.

Each year Artifex will have, in addition to its brevis gallery artists, two featured artists. This year’s featured artists are:

– Filmmaker, Janak Alford. Please stand up, Janak. Janak is an architect, a hacker, an artist, a filmmaker, a father and a former student of Professor Bruce M Firestone. He has his Masters in Architecture. The Committee at his thesis defence gave him the highest mark possible and noted that his was perhaps the best work seen at that level in the history of Carleton’s School of Architecture. His film tonight launches his not-for-profit Ottawa-based studio, prototypeD.org in a new direction—creating original, live action, green screen short films with digital effects that take on the role of a film trailer but not to promote films. Instead they are used to help launch new books, products and services.
– Next we have Novelist, Bruce M Firestone. Bruce please stand up. Prof Bruce went to McGill at 15 which meant that he graduated as a Civil Engineer before he was legally an adult here in Canada. So he had to move to Sydney, Australia where they had already lowered the age of majority to 18 so he could get a job. There Prof Bruce worked for the New South Wales government doing operations research while adding to his education first at the University of New South Wales (where he got a Masters of Engineering-Science) and then at the Australian National University in Canberra, where he received his PhD in Urban Economics. Seven years later Canada got him back. Since returning he’s been a practicing engineer, a real estate developer, a hockey executive (he is the Founder of our NHL team, the Ottawa Senators and Scotiabank Place), University Prof, a consultant, art collector and benefactor, real estate and mortgage broker, columnist with Ottawa Business Journal which he founded in the 1980s (when it was called Ottawa Business News), blogger and futurist as well as Executive Director of not-for-profit Exploriem.org dedicated to assisting entrepreneurs, intrapreneurs and artpreneurs everywhere. Now he is a novelist too with the launch tonight of Book 1 of his new trilogy—Quantum Entity. He is also married and has five kids and one handsome 4-month old grandson as well.

It’ll be a great show I’m sure! This evening we are using hashtags #QE and #Artifex. Feel free to tweet all you like and smartphones are welcome here! The only thing we ask is that you put them on mute or vibrate but feel free to take photos or make videos or tweet as we go along tonight.

We have special guests with us tonight and as I mention your name, can you please rise and wave to everyone?

– First, I would like to welcome his Worship, Mayor of Ottawa, Jim Watson. Jim please stand up! Jim really needs no introduction since he has probably been to everyone’s home at least once to have tea with you and your family. Suffice it to say that Jim barely squeaked into office in his last election with a margin of just 64,853 votes.
– Next a special thanks to our presenting sponsor Jawad Rathore and Vince Petrozza, Founding Partners of Fortress Real Capital. Fortress is an RSP eligible syndicate mortgage product that allows a consumer to invest directly into the proven market of Canadian real estate by becoming a mortgage lender. In English, that means you get a higher rate of return on your investments but they’re in solid mortgages and not in petro-gold penny stocks on the Vancouver Stock Exchange. Without the incredibly generous assistance of Fortress and our other sponsors, we would not be here in this fabulous place, the National Gallery of Canada, celebrating Artpreneurs at the First Annual Artifex Professional Artist Gala. Jawad and Vince please stand up.
– I would also like to recognize our Silent Auction sponsor, Scott Devries, Founder of Devries Wealth Management. Devries is an independent financial services and wealth management firm founded in 1997. They provide advanced wealth, retirement and estate planning solutions for higher net worth clients and owner/manager businesses and professionals. In English, they show you how to invest your money and not lose it.
– I would also like to recognize that we have with us tonight world-famous, explosive jazz vocalist Diane White. Welcome, Diane.
– Now I would like to welcome all our brevis gallery artists. Please stand as I call out your name:
– Hilde Lambrechts, who does drawings and sculpture plus Hilde is the founder of Figureworks.org, a non-profit organization promoting visual art of the human form.
– Sandra Hawkins is a dynamic contemporary visual and media artist
– Robin Andrew runs unposed photography
– Jean Smith is a visual artist extraordinaire—focused on abstract expressionism
– Sue Perley-Robertson is an international award winning abstract artist
– Chris Manning is a master jeweller at Silver Hand Studios
– Victoria Van Eyk is the tough, hard-driving boss at MAFIA Jewellery, an international jewellery company
– Sue Shuker is a mixed media artist and an inaugural member of Ottawa Mixed Media Artists Association
– Pamela Ravek produces exquisite glass art
– The charming, ever-smiling Carlo Lombard runs shotgun video. He uses a shotgun to entice people into his car where they ride shotgun and record a video while driving around. Only half of that statement is true
– Ryan Conrad is an emerging filmmaker who runs smiling pig productions
– Claudia Salguero is a visual artist who uses a combination between photography, digital art and traditional art
– Bruce Spurr represents a meeting place called AtTheSpace where they transform meetings into meaningful encounters
– Jana Fox is acrylic artist who loves to paint movement
– Joanne Savoie, a voyage from graphic art to full-time painter
– Music is an incredibly important part of our lives, all of our lives. It focuses the mind, relaxes us, inspires us and marks our lives—falling in love for the first time, the birth of a child, a victory on the sports field or in any other field of endeavour, a sense of loss, a feeling of euphoria. Tonight, we are fortunate to have with us wonderful musicians and singers—Carl Bray, Andres del Castillo, Melanie Cloutier and Chris Brydges. Carl is one of Canada’s leading young composers. Andres played with world-famous band Eight Seconds and is Senior Producer at r+d creative which he founded in 2004. He wrote the original hit tune for the Ottawa Senators in 1992 which is still heard today. They are joined by mega talented singer Melanie Cloutier and Red Pine Camp’s own balladeer, Chris Brydges who wrote original music and lyrics for the movie we are all anxious to see tonight, Quantum Entity, We Are All ONE based on the book of the same name written by Prof Bruce.
– Music plays an important role in Book 1 of Quantum Entity—Miss Nell from Palos Verdes, California is a performance artist in their mid-21st Century world. But you won’t have to wait until 2050 to hear her work, you’ll be hearing it tonight! Please join me in welcoming Carl, Andy, Melanie and Chris!
7:34 pm-8:09 pm [Songs and Music of Quantum Entity performed live by Carl, Andy, Chris and Mel. Videos play in the background sans audio. Talk of Hands video MUST be cued when Carl plays solo. Other videos can follow in any order.]

Chris, I understand that you are Chief Balladeer at Red Pine Camp. What’s Red Pine Camp and what’s a Chief Balladeer?
[Chris answers]
I also understand that you are a Minister and you are going to say a blessing for us tonight?

8:12pm-8:14pm – [Mayor says a few words]
Mayor Watson, please stay with us for a few more minutes.
8:14pm – Can Presenting Sponsor Jawad Rathore and Vince Petrozza from Fortress Real Capital and our Silent Auction Sponsor Scott Devries please join us on stage along with the two people who also really made this whole event possible Ms. Erika Godwin, Manager, and Ms. Theresia Scholtes, Assistant Manager of Exploriem.org, a not-for-profit entrepreneur, intrapreneur and artpreneur network. Can everyone join me in thanking Jawad, Vince, Scott, Erika and Theresia?
8:14pm-8:19pm – I understand Mr. Rathore and Mr. Petrozza you have something for Erika and Exploriem.org.
[Jawad and Vince to say a few words and hands Erika a big cheque]
Now we have a special video for Erika! So Erika I want you to listen to this then I have a few questions for you!
[Rob looks at the audience]
[Elmira College: Song of Simeon Benjamin, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LLiELSsz8wU] [Play entire video with audio: 50 seconds]
So Erika I understand that Elmira was the first college on the planet to offer women degrees equivalent to men (that was in 1855!) And you went there, right? But not in 1855!
[Erika answers]
What was the College like?
[Erika answers]
Now I understand that Ellen Brooks, one of the heroes in Quantum Entity, We Are All ONE, went to Elmira. Now can you explain how Elmira got into Prof Bruce’s new trilogy?
[Erika answers]
Now tell me, Erika, was the founder of Elmira, Simeon Benjamin, right when he said: that ‘perfection would be designed if women and books combined?’
[Erika answers]
If people want to get more involved with Exploriem.org or with Quantum Entity, how do they do that?
If people have any questions, where can they go for answers?
[Erika answers: they can find us on Twitter, @ProfBruce and @Exploriem as well as @Quantum_Entity. And people can engage with us via Facebook by going to: https://www.facebook.com/Exploriem and https://www.facebook.com/QuantumEntityTrilogy
Oh by the way, everyone can send the first four chapters of Quantum Entity to their friends for FREE by pointing them to: https://www.exploriem.org/quantum-entity-subscribe/. So if you really want to impress a client or give something really nice to a friend, you could do this! Like I said it’s free to them but also free to you to give away! So do it everyone!]

Mr. Devries can you please come forward? I see you have an envelope for Exploriem.org?
Scott gives the envelope to Theresia Scholtes.
[Scott says a few words]
So Theresia, how long have you worked at Exploriem?
[Theresia answers]
I hear it’s a boring place to work—you do the same things day after day?
[Theresia answers]
I also learned from a confidential source that you’ve already had an all expenses trip to the Dominican Republic and are planning on going to Austin next March, all expenses paid again, to attend South by Southwest?
[Theresia answers]
Any jobs open up at Exploriem, you’ll have to let me know, OK?
[Theresia laughs]
Also, rumor has it that you have a bit part in this film we are going to see tonight. What role did you get to play?
[Theresia answers]
8:19pm-8:20pm [Mayor shakes hands and thanks Jawad Rathore, Vince Petrozza, Scott Devries, Erika and Theresia]
8:20pm-8:21pm [Jawad Rathore/Vince Petrozza/Scott Devries/Erika Godwin/Theresia Scholtes/Mayor Exit Stage]

Janak can you please join us onstage and tell us a little bit about the adventure you are about to take us on?
*Oh Ellin – Gob* [29 seconds]
8:23pm-8:26pm Hello everyone, my name is Janak Alford. I met Prof Bruce many years ago when I was a student of his at Carleton’s School of Architecture. More recently, about eight months ago actually, Bruce shared with me an early version of his manuscript which became the novel Quantum Entity | We Are All ONE that is being released here tonight along with my film based on it.

I was captivated by the world he created of a near term future that is both wondrous and dangerous. One Sunday afternoon, I invited Prof Bruce to our not-for-profit Ottawa-based, underground studio, prototypeD.org—it’s in the Glebe on Bank Street—and I asked him, “Do people ever create original, live action, green screen short films with digital effects that take on the role of a film trailer but not to promote films—instead to help launch new books, products and services?” His immediate reaction was enthusiastic and so we decided to make a film trailer for his book. But somehow a 4 to 5 minute trailer has become a 22 minute long short film which you will see in a few moments.

You are soon going to meet young Damien Bell, perhaps the greatest physicist of his day. He has created Quantum Entities, artificially intelligent creatures that bond with their human counterparts—they are more like familiars than pets and they are very, very clever.

One of the central questions of the novel is at what point do artificially intelligent creatures acquire consciousness, at what point do they or should they acquire human rights? In the book, there is a struggle before the Supreme Court of the United States to make this determination in a case that closely reflects the earlier civil rights struggle there as well as the efforts by women to acquire the vote and cease being property. It is a problem that our society is only too likely to face and perhaps it won’t take to mid-century before it is upon us.

Damien also faces implacable opposition from established US-based industry whose economic interests are damaged by this upstart, ultra fast growing, globe spanning tech company he and Ellen Brooks have founded—Quantum Computing Corp. He has many interesting experiences in his journey through life not least of which is that he is loved by two women—performance artist Miss Nell from Palos Verdes, California and the fabulous Ellen Brooks from upstate New York. Damien’s family is partly based in Rochester, New York and Toronto.

The book that Prof Bruce wrote moves in one direction and this film is a cross-section of it—we call it Generation Q because it is our artistic interpretation of parts of his novel—it’s a ride and I very much hope you will enjoy it.

Darryl, can we roll film?

8:26pm-8:48pm [View Short Film—Darryl cue movie + sound]
8:48pm-8:49pm – Wow! I want to see the full length movie now! Can I ask Director Janak Alford, Author Bruce Firestone, Editor Murray McGregor and Lead Actors—Jess Edwards, Julien Nolin and Theresia Scholtes to come onstage please. Can our QEs join us onstage too please?
*Lose yourself – Eminem* [1 minute 18 seconds] [Rob and all the cast and QEs rock a bit and dance around a bit to Eminem—They dance and walk to the music like Ellen DeGeneres does on her show] [THEN EVERYONE SITS INCLUDING ROB ON CHAIRS ON STAGE PROVIDED FOR THEM.]
[The QEs sit in front of their people. Su7e sits in front of Nell (Jess), Pet3r in front of Ellen (Theresia) and Ash3r in front of Damien (Julien).]

8:49pm-8:59 pm [Q & A – Inside Actors Studio with Janak Alford, Bruce Firestone, Murray McGregor and Lead Actors—Jess Edwards, Theresia Scholtes and Julien Nolin]

Wow. What a wild ride! Thanks Janak.
Q1: So Janak, how are you feeling right now?
[Janak answers]
Q2: I’m told that you put twice as much work into this as you did your Masters. So do you think they ought to give you your PhD now?
[Janak answers]
Q3. As the song says, do you feel like you only have one chance, one opportunity so don’t blow it?
[Janak answers]
Q4. Janak, why did you call this version of Quantum Entity, the ‘Q Edition’, what’s the meaning of that?
[Janak answers]
Q5. So Janak, what’s next for the studio?
[Janak answers]
Q6. Murray, I’ve heard that the answer to the question, ‘What makes a great writer?’ is ‘A great editor!’ How much editing did you have to do of Prof Bruce’s novel? Just how many rewrites did this thing go through?
[Murray answers]
Q7. Murray, you suggested to Bruce that he launch Book 2 in the trilogy next March in Austin at South by Southwest. What’s weird about that is that you suggested it without knowing that Prof Bruce had already written Chapter 1 of Book 2 and it’s set entirely at and around the University of Texas at Austin. Is it possible that you guys having worked together for a long time can now read each others minds?
[Murray answers]
Q8. So ladies and Julien? What do you think of the film now that it’s all come together?
[Group answers]
Q9. So I only have one question for you, Julien—who does Damien end up with? Is it Ellen (pointing at Theresia) or Nell (pointing at Jess)?
[Julien answers]
Q10. I understand that you, Jess, are the only professional actor in the film. What was it like working with this cast and crew?
[Jess answers]
Q11. Janak, where can people go to see your film?
[Janak answers: They can visit our YouTube channel, https://www.youtube.com/user/quantumentitytrilogy]
OK, thanks for that. Now do we have another video we want to show? I think we do. This one shows the very first sighting of the very first Quantum Entity—his name is Pet3r. Can we run that now?
8:59pm-9:01 pm [Watch two minute Pet3r movie: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iqSSM5d1e9w]
[PET3R – The First Quantum Entity]
9:01 pm-9:09 pm [Q+A continues]
Q9. So those guys don’t look too scary. What’s all the fuss about, Bruce?
[Prof Bruce answers]
Q12. What on earth prompted you to write Quantum Entity, Bruce? How long is this trilogy thing going to be anyway?
[Prof Bruce answers]
Q13. Janak, how did you make Pet3r move like that and tell us about the whole creative process behind bringing a #QE to life!?
[Janak answers]
OK, let’s take a few questions from the floor. There are two volunteers going around with mikes. If you want to ask a question, put up your hand and we will try to get to you.

[QEs start to move around, leave the stage, move around in the audience, then they are still for a few moments, then move again, then they are still again. They will be called back to the stage by the MC, coming to sit back with their human counterparts as the radio plays begin.]

Saad Rashid’s Question:
I got a chance to read an early version of Quantum Entity and it made me a more effective leader—I respond to challenges in my own life in ways I have never been able to do before. I wanted to ask Prof Bruce—did you intend to make your trilogy a learning experience or was it just for entertainment?
[Prof Bruce answers]

Chris Beaudoin’s Question:
I have a question for Julien. Damien Bell, QE’s main protagonist, is an attractive character—he embodies the spirit and drive of top tech entrepreneurs but still he’s pretty humble while he faces a lot of tough challenges. How do you think you would do if you faced some of those hard times yourself?
[Julien answers]

Isack Galib’s Question:
I want to say my favorite character in the book is Nell. So my question is for Jess. But first I want to say that I think you captured Nell perfectly. How do you channel a character like her when she’s from California and you’re from Ottawa? How do you talk in front of a green screen to something that’s not even there?
[Jess answers]

OK, we have time for just two or three more questions?
9:08 – 9:09 pm Gifts are given to Jess Edwards, Theresia Scholtes and Julien Nolin on stage as well as Janak Alford.

9:09 to 9:20 pm Intermission

9:20pm – 9:22pm Alright, time to move on!
Some of the cast of the film came together at prototypeD.org to record two scenes from Book 1 as radio plays.
Before we cue the radio plays, can our QEs please rejoin us onstage?
[*Play Habenera while QEs come back on stage looking a bit shamefaced: https://www.dropbox.com/home/Radio%20Show/Audio, Habanera.mp3*] [30 seconds]
9:22pm-9:41 pm [Cue and play Quantum Entity We Are All ONE Radio Plays (HD): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ab_ukkl4m5U]
9:41 pm – 9:42 pm Thank you to our cast and QEs, Prof Bruce and Janak. Please take your seats!
9:42pm-9:43pm Now I would like to ask Scott Williams to join me on stage. Scott is the President and founder of EyeVero Marketing Communications Group. The company specializes in behavioral science-based marketing methodology and marketing process management.

EyeVero’s portfolio includes many of the largest companies in the world including OpenText Corporation, Hewlett Packard and Symantec. EyeVero also manages the marketing and communications efforts for many of Ottawa’s premier companies including bluArc, Nitro IT Business Solutions, RjR Innovations and StoneShare.

EyeVero is the company that created the dramatic cover art for Prof Bruce’s new novel, as well as built the trilogy’s website www.brucemfirestone.com. They also did an extraordinary rebrand for Exploriem.org last year.
*John Lennon- Give Peace A Chance* [38 seconds]
9:43pm-9:45pm Great Scott! So how did you get involved with Exploriem.org, prototypeD.org and Prof Bruce’s new trilogy?
[Scott answers]
So you are here to officially launch all the platforms where people can go to download the e-book or get a paperback copy of Prof Bruce’s new book and also launch the film live on YouTube, right?
[Scott answers]
Can you tell us how much is it for an e-copy of the book?
[Scott answers: $9.95]
And for a paperback?
[Scott answers: depending on where you go, it’s under $20]
And where can people get a copy?
[Scott says: well they can get a copy here tonight signed by the Professor. And they can always go to: www.brucemfirestone.com too.]
Well thanks for that, Scott. Now I heard that you brought a friend along to help you with the launch. Correct?
[Scott answers. He congratulates prototypeD.org, Exploriem.org and Prof Bruce on Artifex, the movie and the book.]
9:45pm-9:46pm Scott Williams says, “Pet3r come here, I need you.” Pet3r pushes button on screen and launches book and all videos, live.
[Run video and audio of Pet3r pushing the live button.]
9:46pm – 9:56pm – Thank you Scott! Nice job Pet3r! I have to get me one of those to help me with untether.TV! Prof Bruce, can you rejoin me on stage? I know you wanted to say a few words.
*Travelin’ Soldier – Dixie Chicks* [38 seconds]
[Run Sponsor Slideshow in background]
[Prof Bruce thanks all sponsors and attendees, congratulates Brevis gallery artists and Janak and cast and crew]

Prof Bruce: Wowza, what a show.

First I want to thank Rob Woodbridge for a great job tonight.
[Applause]

Here’s a thought experiment for everyone to try tonight, in fact right now!

People, close your eyes for a moment, come on, close your eyes. Trust me, nothing bad will happen.

Now go to your Happy Place. See it in your mind’s eye. The place where you are happiest. Is everyone there yet? OK.

[Pause]

Now ask yourself: What would that place feel like, what would it be like without any sunshine, music, water, books, gentle breezes, friends, games to play, dancing, beautiful gardens, waves, smells, fabulous paintings, flowers, bird song, poetry, humor, singing, family or photos to remember it all?

[Pause, 10 seconds of silence]

OK, you can open your eyes now.

Your happy place just became your unhappy place—a horrible, horrible mess. And that’s life without Art and Artpreneurs.

I mean how diverse, sustainable, interesting and vibrant a place would Ottawa be or any city if every one of our artists went on an Atlas Shrugged-inspired strike forever?

So I wanted to personally thank each of you for coming here tonight—brevis gallery artists, sponsors, entrepreneurs, intrapreneurs, artpreneurs, all our guests. It is marvelous that you came.

Not everyone though believes that artpreneurs are important but everyone here believes it just by being here, you’ve shown that.

I asked a lot of people to help and I got turned down a lot—many people said to me: Well, the arts just aren’t important enough to warrant my support. I got that a lot.

Then I’d ask ‘em: Do you like music?
Oh, sure I got some great tunes on my iPod.
How about films, I’d ask?
Yeah, my girlfriend and I love going to the movies.
You ever go out for dinner?
Sure, sure, they’d answer.
Do you that those incredible meals you eat—someone actually had to go to culinary school and apprentice for YEARS to learn how to do that. Really?
How about the jewellery you gave your girlfriend for her birthday? Did they self design?
Naw, I got ‘em from an auction house in Montreal in an estate sale—heck of a deal.

But even after all that, many would still turn me down cuz the arts aren’t important. So to those that didn’t, to our sponsors and partners and all our guests here tonight, who made an unbelievable commitment of time and money, wow, thanks. It took a lot of courage to step out and do this with us.
[Pause. Hold hand up in black power salute. Applause.]

Thank you!

You can see our sponsor names on the slideshow running behind me but I wanted to take a few moments to name them individually:

Dedication:

By the way, I wanted to mention to everyone here tonight that I dedicated the trilogy to all of my students but especially Gen Y. It’s these kids aged 19 to 32 who are building not only great enterprises, some of them world-spanning, global-altering ones like the one I describe in my trilogy, Quantum Computing Corp, but they’re also contributing to building better communities through vision, talent, focus and hard work as well as finding innovative ways of giving back to society. It’s peculiar that entrepreneurs today, who are in it only for the money, have none while those that are building insanely great products and services while contributing back to their communities, have it all.
Gen Y could be the real successors to perhaps the greatest Generation who ever lived—my father’s generation who in the period from 1914 to 1969 took us from buggies to planes and then to the Moon, who faced down two World Wars, a Great Depression, the Nazi menace and the long Cold War. They gave us the integrated circuit and the Internet. Gen Y, it’s your turn now.

Thank You:
I would be remiss if I did not personally thank the staff at Exploriem.org and our Board of Directors for their perseverance, dedication, hard work and just flat-out guts. Can these folks please stand up:

Erika Godwin, Theresia Scholtes, Matthew Firestone, Alex Wolfe, Siavosh Noruziaan, Peter Hauderowicz, Larry Poirier, Todd Jamieson and Matt Davis—come on, please stand up!

[Applause] [Our three QEs silently come on stage and stand around me, a little behind me in a semi circle. Janak Alford also comes on stage and stands next to me.]

There are four other thank yous I have to add:

First to my gentleman editor, Murray McGregor and my filmmaker partner, Janak Alford—Bravo.

[Applause]

Second, to my family, Cora, Dawn, Andrew, Rachel, Mimi, Matt, Jessica, Yulia and Godric, Peter and Catherine, and my later father, Professor OJ Firestone, thank you for caring for me and about me—it’s way more than I deserve.

[Pause]

Thirdly to the musicians heard tonight, Carl Bray, Andres del Castillo, Melanie Cloutier and Chris Brydges—Bravo!

Lastly, to entrepreneurs, intrapreneurs and artpreneurs everywhere, remember brothers and sisters: PRESS ON!

[Janak speaks]

There are many symbols that we use in our world. We have gestures which express a variety of things—peace, victory, anger, liar, come near, go away, OK, even die.

[Janak hand signals: V, V, clenched fist, BS symbol, hand motion—come here, waving motion—go away, thumb and index finger in an ‘O’, throat slitting]

We clap our hands to encourage, we salute to respect. But Prof Bruce’s book expresses a moral truth that many great minds from many different backgrounds have expressed before—that we are all one. He raises the question—that gets argued before the Supreme Court of the United Stares in the book—when do artificially intelligent creatures acquire human rights? It is an argument similar to the ones raised in the fight for civil rights by black people or the fight by women to get the vote and to cease being property. It is one that we are only too likely to face and soon…

So we need a symbol for this. We’ve reached back 1700 years to the Roman Hand of Constantine I who was the first to use it.

Ellen describes it this way, “The Hand Signal of Constantine I is subtly different from the ‘I’m No. 1’ or ‘We’re No. 1’ hand signal that you might see from a NBA player or team. The thumb is in support of the index finger not wrapped around your middle finger. You actually have to practice it a bit.

[Janak demos the ‘We’re No. 1’ hand signal then transitions to Constantine’s version then back again then back again.]

Ellen continues, “To us, it expresses the support that our Quantum partners give us and we give them—that we are moving forward together to reach a common destiny, whatever that might be. “

And now I would ask everyone to rise, come on please rise, everyone, and do it with us:

WE ARE ALL ONE!

Hand of Constantine I

[QEs, Janak Alford and Prof Bruce raise their hands and we look around the audience and point at people everywhere.

Darryl raises the lights in the theatre a little (not full on) so we can pick out people a little easier. After I leave the stage with the QEs, Darryl turns them down again.] [Prof Bruce and co. use the Constantine I salute as does Erika, Theresia, Matthew, Sia, Alex, CJ, Saad, Isack, Murray, volunteers, QEs and anyone else who feels like it.] [Prof Bruce, QEs and Janak leave the stage waving to the crowd and to thunderous applause—]

9:56 pm – 10:00 pm [Rob speaks] Ms. Scholtes can you please rejoin me onstage? May we ask Diane White to join us as well? You can help us with our door prize draw!
*Play Moanin from https://www.dianewhite.com/ as Theresia and Diane come onstage: 20 seconds*
[Theresia brings up box or bowl with all biz cards in them. Diane does the draw]

It’s not too late to add your biz card for the draw! Just hold up your card and pass it along to the end of the row and one of our volunteers will collect it. But be quick!

[Collect biz cards] [Diane draws name and reads it out] [Winners come on stage to collect their prizes] [Continue until all prizes are won]

10:00pm – 10:08pm OK, we’re almost at the end of the formal show. But not the end of the party! Stick around! We’re going to continue to rock for awhile yet! Also, remember the silent auction ends at 10:30 pm. So get your bids in! Also visit each of our Brevis Gallery Artists and support them too. And don’t forget to get your Goodie bag when you do (eventually) leave this beautiful place.

For myself I just wanted to say what a privilege it’s been to be here and serve as your MC. I believe in what we are dong here tonight—creativity and design is not something you can outsource or offshore and we need more artpreneurs not fewer.

OK, we have asked our balladeer to end our show tonight. Can we have Chris Brydges back onstage please?

Chris is going to play a beautiful melody he composed and wrote; it’s called The Successors also known as Nell’s Folly. By the way, Book 3 in the Quantum Entity trilogy is named ‘The Successors’.

Chris, can you tell us a little bit about the song? Why does it have two names?

[Chris answers: Well, one of Miss Nell’s teachings is that if you are going to change the world—if you are going to have a revolution—you are not really the successor, it’s your successors you should worry about—how you pass whatever you have created on to the people who will come after you. As to why it is also called Nell’s folly, well, you’ll just have to read the books.]

Chris Brydges performs Nell’s Folly

Film by prototypeD.org, Directed by Janak Alford

My name is Janak Alford. I am an Architect, a hacker, an artist and a filmmaker. I run not-for-profit, Ottawa-based, underground film studio, prototypeD.org. About eight months ago and after reading an early version of his manuscript, I was captivated by the world of Quantum Entity created by novelist Bruce M Firestone which describes a near term future that is both wondrous and dangerous. You are shortly going to meet young Damien Bell, perhaps the greatest physicist of his day. He has created Quantum Entities, artificially intelligent creatures that bond with their human counterparts—they are more like familiars than pets and they are very, very clever. One of the central questions of the novel is at what point do artificially intelligent creatures acquire consciousness, at what point do they or should they acquire human rights?

Before you see my film, take another few moments to read the rest of my introduction, then roll film OK?

Damien faces implacable opposition from established US-based industry whose economic interests are damaged by this upstart, ultra fast growing, globe spanning tech company he and Ellen Brooks have founded—Quantum Computing Corp. He has many interesting experiences in his journey through life not least of which is that he is loved by two women—performance artist Miss Nell from Palos Verdes, California and the fabulous Ellen Brooks from upstate New York.

The book that Prof Bruce wrote is available at www.brucemfirestone.com. It moves in one direction and this film is a cross-section of it—we call it Generation Q because it is our artistic interpretation of six parts of his novel and also this story to me is about a generation of Quantum Entities who, in their mid 21st Century world, are the real successors of today’s Gen Y, hence the name, ‘Gen Q’. It’s a ride and I very much hope you will enjoy it.

More Background on the Book

If you would like to read the first four chapters of Quantum Entity | We Are All ONE, you can get them free by signing up here: https://www.exploriem.org/quantum-entity-subscribe. It will start you on an incredible journey that over the course of the trilogy will combine action/adventure, romance, politics and the law with science and science fiction as well as business and entrepreneurship. You will learn many things as Firestone tries to answer the big questions in life and finally the tale becomes a spiritual one as well.

More Background on the Film

I met Prof Bruce many years ago when I was a student of his at Carleton’s School of Architecture. More recently, about eight months ago actually, Bruce shared with me an early version of his manuscript which became the novel Quantum Entity | We Are All ONE that was released at Artifex on June 20, 2012 along with my film based on it.

One Sunday afternoon, many moons ago, I invited Prof Bruce to our not-for-profit Ottawa-based, underground studio, prototypeD.org—it’s in the Glebe on Bank Street—and I asked him, “Do people ever create original, live action, green screen short films with digital effects that take on the role of a film trailer but not to promote films—instead to help launch new books, products and services?” His immediate reaction was enthusiastic and so we decided to make a film trailer for his book. But somehow a 4 to 5 minute trailer has become a 26 minute long short film which you can see above.

In the book, there is a struggle before the Supreme Court of the United States to make a determination as to whether sufficiently intelligent, yet artificial creatures, have any rights or can they be turned of with no more thought than when you unplug your toaster? These creatures have laid bare the architecture of the Internet and can access all information there– paywalls, firewalls, security systems mean nothing to Quantum Entities, they are as transparent as a clean window pane of good quality glass. Damien says that QEs can do no harm since they are bound by Issac Asmiov’s three laws of robotics (actually, a close but not exact version of those). Others think they are not only a national security threat but a threat to the economic interests of large, entrenched mega-corporations. It’s a case that closely reflects the earlier civil rights struggle as well as the efforts by women to acquire the vote and cease being property and the struggle by gay persons for equality under the law. It is a problem that our society is only too likely to face and perhaps it won’t take to mid-century before it is upon us.

I hope you enjoy the ride.

If you would like to help our not-for-profit studio, you can purchase images from the film from a related site: qrankcase.com. Images on practically indestructible canvas will last four generations and are ready to be hung on your wall the moment you receive them from us. You may also purchase the DVD of the film which will allow you to enjoy it in a way that improves on the YouTube experience.

Love Triangle, Nell and Damien and Damien and Ellen

You will also be helping propel our studio in a new direction: creating original, live action, green screen short films with digital effects that take on the role of film trailer but not to promote films. Instead, they are used to help launch new books, products and services.

Also if you believe in Ellen’s message that ‘We Are All ONE’, can you help us spread the word? Let your friends know that they too can get the first four chapters of Quantum Entity | We Are All ONE free by sharing going to this page: https://www.exploriem.org/quantum-entity-subscribe/

You will be introducing them to a future that is both marvelous and frightening—filled with abundant opportunity and many challenges and populated by characters who seize their days on this planet, every day, making each day count.

World Premiere of Short Film by Not-for-Profit, Ottawa-based Studio, prototypeD
Media Release

Artifex Slider

OTTAWA – June18, 2012 – Artist entrepreneurs are coming to the National Gallery of Canada to participate in the first Annual Artifex Professional Artist Gala on June 20, 2012. Presented by Fortress Real Capital, the Gala starts at 6:00 p.m.

Mayor Jim Watson will kickoff the Gala, which is hosted by UNTETHER.tv’s Rob Woodbridge. It will include a concert by Carl Bray, Andrés del Castillo, Mélanie Cloutier and Chris Brydges. Carl Bray is one of Canada’s leading young composers. Andrés played with world-famous band Eight Seconds and is Senior Producer at r+d creative. They are joined by talented singer Mélanie Cloutier and balladeer Chris Brydges.

Featured artists at this year’s Artifex are:

• Filmmaker – Janak Alford. Mr. Alford is an architect, hacker, artist and filmmaker. He has his Masters in Architecture. His short film Quantum Entity, We Are All ONE, will premiere at Artifex. It is based on the book of the same name written by Bruce M. Firestone. With the release of his film, Mr. Alford is taking his not-for-profit Ottawa-based, underground studio, prototypeD in a new direction—creating original, live action, green screen short films with digital effects that take on the role of film trailer, but not to promote films—instead, they are being used to help launch new books, products and services.
• Novelist – Bruce M. Firestone. Professor Firestone is launching Book 1 of his new trilogy Quantum Entity at Artifex.

“Writing Quantum Entity, We Are All ONE, book 1 of my new trilogy, is one of the great joys of my professional life. This trilogy is an opportunity for me to share with everyone a vision of a future that is both marvellous and frightening—filled with abundant opportunity and many challenges and populated by characters who seize their days on this planet, every day, making each day count,” said Bruce M. Firestone.

“After reading Part I, Discovery of Quantum Entity | We Are All ONE, I was totally hooked. It’s better than ‘The Goal’ and more entertaining even than ‘Dune’!” said David Perry, Partner, Perry-Martel International, co-author, Guerrilla Marketing for Job Hunters 3.0.

Artifex is organized by not-for-profit Exploriem.org, a network for business entrepreneurs, intrapreneurs and artist entrepreneurs. Proceeds from the Gala go to prototypeD.

“On behalf of all of us at Fortress Real Capital, we are delighted to be part of Artifex. We are committed to giving back to the communities we are invested in and to the City of Ottawa. We believe organizations such as Exploriem.org who support the arts are helping to build a more vibrant community—artist entrepreneurs are one of the keys to creating more diverse, more interesting, more sustainable cities and we want to support their efforts in this regard,” said Jawad Rathore, President and CEO, Fortress Real Capital, Toronto.

Brevis Gallery artists include:

• Robin Andrew – Unposed Photography
• Ryan Conrad – Emerging Filmmaker, Smiling Pig Productions
• Jana Fox – acrylic artist who loves to paint movement
• Sandra Hawkins – Contemporary Visual and Media Artist
• Hilde Lambrechts – Drawing and Sculpture
• Carlo Lombard – Shotgun Video
• Chris Manning – Master Jeweler, Silver Hand Studios
• Sue Perley-Robertson – Abstract Artist
• Pamela Ravek – Glass Art
• Claudia Salguero – Visual Artist, Photography, Digital Art and Traditional Art
• Sue Shuker – Mixed Media Artist
• Jean Smith – Abstract Expressionism
• Bruce Spurr – Transforming Meetings into Meaningful Encounters
• Victoria Van Eyk – MAFIA Jewelry
• Joanne Savoie, a voyage from graphic art to full-time painter

Pamela Ravek commented, “It is extremely positive and rewarding that our community leaders see the value in supporting the arts. The arts enrich people’s lives, whether it is to evoke emotion, to cause people to stop in their tracks with awe, or simply to enhance and beautify an environment. Artifex provides a sense of caring about local artists by offering a glimpse of the wonderful talents that Ottawa artists have to offer.”

Janak Alford, founder of prototypeD Urban Workshops Inc. added, “All young artists and entrepreneurs talk about changing the world. Growing into an artist and taking your first steps are not unlike the transition from childhood to adulthood and is equally transformational. The skills of an artist transform not just his or her own world but everyone’s by providing a window and a vision that was once unimaginable.”

Silent Auction sponsor Scott Devries of Devries Financial Group said, “I have had the pleasure of working with a number of the young people at Exploriem.org and have always come away impressed by their energy, perseverance and creativity. As an entrepreneur myself, I fully support what they are doing as I think they are an essential fabric of today’s and, more importantly, tomorrow’s business community.”

Nell’s Folly

Posted on
Thursday 7 June 2012

We present below some images (by prototypeD.org) and original music and lyrics (by Chris Brydges) from the upcoming film based on the book, Quantum Entity, We Are All ONE (by Bruce M Firestone).

Foreword:

When young Damien Bell, physicist and engineer, and his business partner, the fabulous Ellen Brooks unleash Damien’s twin creations, a new artificial life-form he calls Quantum Counterparts and she calls Quantum Entities—because she believes they may in fact be sentient beings—and the Quantum phone, their delivery system for Quantum Counterparts, they revolutionize communications and search industries in their mid 21st century world.

Damien and Ellen and their new company, Quantum Computing Corp, introduce the era of quantum economics, a condition where scarcity is a thing of the past. Together they build a great new globe-spanning, ultra-fast growing tech enterprise that somehow gets away from them.

Damien is distracted from his scientific and startup work by performance artist and world superstar, Miss Nell, whom he first meets at Nuit Blanche in Toronto.

Their adventures take them to Four Corners and a mystical place called Third Mesa in Arizona, Boise and the Salmon River in Idaho, Phantom Ranch at the bottom of the Grand Canyon, Palos Verdes, California, the Big Smoke (Toronto), San Pedro Town and Marco Gonzalez on Ambergris Caye in Belize, then Boston, New York City, Washington DC, Langley Air Force Base, San Quentin State Prison and finally San Francisco where their group will, of necessity, transform itself into the largest protest movement the US has seen in almost 90 years.

What does it take to start, build and then defend a great new enterprise? How do you extend human rights to a new non-human life-form when such rights barely apply to people in these troubled days of the Republic, a time when the United States has fallen from first among nations to third after Imperial China and the European Union, with the AU (African Union) closing in on them fast?

Inevitably, they come into conflict with entrenched business and political interests. Are Quantum Entities truly friends to human beings or are they, as the US Government maintains, a threat to national security?

@ProfBruce

Open Letter to Ottawa Sports Hall of Fame

Posted on
Thursday 7 June 2012

To: Michael Flanagan, Chair and Members of the Board of Directors
From: Dr. Bruce M Firestone, Founder

Dear Mike and Board of Directors of the Ottawa Sports Hall of Fame:

On behalf of myself, Cyril Leeder, Rod Bryden, Randy Sexton, my family and theirs, I wanted to express my profound gratitude that you saw it in your hearts to bring all of us into the Hall of Fame together.

The evening last night, the heartfelt speech by Dean Brown, the energy and enthusiasm from Mike Flanagan, the emotional pitch of a clearly moved Michael Gerrior, the excellent organization by Sue Kavanagh and the rest of your BOD, the presence of our Mayor Jim Watson and his kind comments about the connection between sports and city building, the wonderful venue that the new Ottawa Convention Centre provides, the fantastic band and, finally, the speeches of the inductees and the reception these got from a crowd of over 400 were marvelous.

You are all to be congratulated; what an effort!

On to even better things in the days ahead.

I look forward to some day perhaps seeing some great Sens players joining us in the Hall.

I have put this on our EQ Journal as an open letter to all of you for the fantastic work done, first, to Bring Back the Senators, second, to keep them here and, third, to recognize what this team has added to a wonderful city and country. Please feel free to post this (https://www.eqjournal.org/?p=3854) and my remarks (https://www.eqjournal.org/?p=3813) on the HOF site if you feel it is warranted.

Lastly, I was hoping you would post that short video history you showed last night on https://ottawasportshalloffame.ca/ so we may share it with everyone.

Could you please also forward my letter to the other members of your Board for us?

Kindest personal regards to all,

Dr. Bruce M. Firestone, B.Eng. (Civil), M.Eng.-Sci., PhD.
