Every scrap of digital data ever recorded and most analogue information (like every major film ever produced) are doomed to oblivion. When original film canisters are opened sometimes decades after being recorded, all film historians see is dust. What would you do with a reel-to-reel tape or an eight track cassette? Throw it away, that’s what. Soon that’ll happen to videotape, CDs, DVDs, Blu-Rays, you name it.
But maybe not these 5-d discs that can, according to the University of Southampton’s Optical Research Center, “withstand temperatures up to 1000 degrees C and are estimated to last up to 13.8 billion years at room temperature without degrading.”
